Locating, Understanding, and Presenting Youth Suicide Data

The first step in addressing any public health problem is to access and examine data to help describe and understand the extent and nature of the problem. This workshop will introduce some of the important issues in accessing and analyzing suicide-related data, which can be used to educate the public, policy makers, and advocates about the problem of youth suicide. We will review how to obtain suicide data and translate it into useful formats for different audiences.

This workshop is designed for professionals and concerned citizens, including public health officials, mental health officials, health/mental health providers, and members of community-based planning groups for suicide prevention. No experience necessary.

Educational Objectives:

Upon completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the role of data in suicide prevention.
  • Locate suicide-related data sources available over the Internet.
  • List strengths and limitations for suicide-related data sets.
  • Illustrate how to obtain quality suicide-related data.
  • Define components of effective tables, graphs, and charts.
  • Interpret rates, prevalence, and incidence data.
  • Describe methodological considerations in data analysis and interpretation.
  • Describe the most effective way to report youth suicide data to different target audiences.

Suggested Schedule- The pace in which you complete the workshop is up to you. Most people find that the workshop takes approximately 12 hours in total to complete. Again, you may complete these 12 hours anytime of day or night over as long a period as you like (e.g. one month, one week, etc.).
